I thought you might be interested in a story about a trail runner’s encounter with a black bear in Canada. She tried playing dead but the bear seemed to bite her out of curiosity. Is there a reason to ever play dead when facing a large predator?

I was driving along the 405 this morning, heavy traffic as usual when I observed birds flying erratically as if someone was throwing shots at them. I remembered an article I read about strange animal behavior prior to the recent earthquake in China. I called my husband and told him about it but he just shrugged it off. Four hours later, we had a 5.6 earthquake felt all over Los Angeles. Just wanted to share this… - 7/29/08

@Andrew: Thanks for the note. No, you should never play dead with a black bear. The attack numbers are a little ahead of brown bear statistics. Since they are omnivores their predatory behavior on humans and aggression is considered odd but it has become pretty common since the 1990s. @Amelie: Animal behavior changes during quakes are fairly common (back to 373 BC) but dismissed because they have not been formally studied. I personally saw behavior changes 30 days prior to a 6.7 in my area and escalated changes 24 hours prior to.
