Californians for Humane Farming

Table of contents for Humane Farming & Prop 2

  1. Californians for Humane Farming
  2. California’s Proposition 2: Humane or Insane?

farm-animals.jpgProposition 2 (Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty) is something you should take a look at over at Humane Farming dot Org.

This initiative will get a lot of backlash from those involved in the livestock industry and you can read some of the opposition issues while you are on the organization’s website.

I’ve written about this before (1998) and briefly blogged about inhumane farming in response to the Happy Cow commercials being aired when undercover slaughterhouse video was released earlier this year.

Thinking about how food is raised, handled, butchered, and served up is not something most people do–especially when they are chomping down at the fast food chains.

Making conscious choices and pushing your local grocers and butchers to supply humanely raised foods and organically produced foods helps support those efforts–you are voting with your dollars. That is where you can place a lot of pressure for change.

Earlier this year I posted some useful links to humane farming and sustainable agriculture websites.

My opinion? If you are ingesting meat you should consider pushing for change in the way these animals are treated.

“You are what you eat” takes on a whole new meaning if you think about it…ponder this especially if you are at a BBQ during this holiday weekend.

Vote with your dollars and then vote at the polls.

  1. This November 4, Californians should vote YES on 2 – a modest measure that stops cruel and inhumane treatment of animals, specifically ending the practice of cramming farm animals into cages so small the animals can’t even turn around, lie down or extend their limbs.

It’s simply wrong to confine veal calves, breeding pigs, and egg-laying hens in tiny cages barely larger than their bodies. Calves are tethered by the neck and can barely move, pigs in severe confinement bite the metal bars of their crates, and hens get trapped and even impaled in their wire cages. We wouldn’t force our pets to live in filthy, cramped cages for their whole lives, and we shouldn’t force farm animals to endure such misery, either.

Prop 2 is endorsed by the Humane Society of the United States, the Center for Food Safety, and the California Veterinary Medical Association.
